Achieving a Confident Smile with Clear Braces

For many years, traditional metal braces were the go-to solution for correcting dental misalignments. While effective, metal braces came with their own set of drawbacks, such as aesthetic concerns. Enter clear braces…a modern orthodontic innovation that combines the effectiveness of traditional braces with the aesthetic appeal of invisible brackets.

Clear braces, also known as ceramic braces, are a revolutionary advancement in orthodontic treatment. Like traditional metal braces, clear braces are designed to correct misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, spacing and bite issues. However, what sets them apart is their discreet appearance. Instead of using metal brackets and wires, clear braces use clear or tooth-colored brackets and thin, translucent wires. This nearly invisible design makes them an appealing option for individuals who want to maintain a more natural appearance while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Benefits of Clear Braces

Aesthetics: One of the most significant advantages of clear braces is their discreet appearance. The brackets blend seamlessly with the natural color of your teeth, making them far less noticeable than traditional metal braces.

Comfort: Clear braces are designed with patient comfort in mind. The brackets are made from smooth, biocompatible materials that minimize irritation and discomfort. Additionally, the wires are finer and more flexible, reducing the friction that can cause sore spots in the mouth.

Effective Alignment: While clear braces may have a more subtle appearance, they are just as effective as traditional braces when it comes to correcting orthodontic issues. The advanced materials and technology used in clear braces allow for precise and controlled tooth movement, ensuring a successful outcome.

Versatility: Clear braces can be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

Predictable Results: Clear braces are designed using advanced computer modeling and imaging technology, which allows Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson to accurately predict and plan your treatment. This not only ensures optimal results but also reduces the treatment time compared to older orthodontic methods.

Reduced Disruptions: Unlike removable aligners, clear braces are fixed in place, eliminating the need to remember to wear and remove them. This reduces the risk of interruptions in your treatment progress and ensures consistent tooth movement.

Clear braces offer a modern and discreet approach to orthodontic treatment, allowing you to achieve a confident smile without compromising your appearance. With their aesthetic appeal, comfort, and effectiveness, clear braces are becoming an increasingly popular choice among individuals of all ages seeking a straighter and more aligned smile. If you're considering clear braces as a treatment option, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Quest Johnson Orthodontics. During this initial appointment, Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson will assess your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine whether clear braces are the right choice for you.

Embrace the journey to a confident smile and let the power of clear braces transform your life and your smile.

Transforming Smiles with Invisible Braces

A confident smile can light up a room, but many individuals shy away from orthodontic treatment due to the visibility and discomfort associated with traditional braces. However, advancements in orthodontic technology have paved the way for a discreet and comfortable teeth-straightening solution…Invisalign. Invisalign has revolutionized orthodontic treatment by offering a nearly invisible alternative to traditional braces.

Invisalign is a cutting-edge orthodontic treatment that utilizes a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, making them an ideal choice for individuals who wish to discreetly improve their smiles. Made from a smooth, BPA-free plastic, the aligners are custom-designed for each patient, ensuring a comfortable fit that gently shifts teeth into the desired position. With Invisalign, you can achieve a stunning smile without the noticeable brackets and wires associated with traditional braces.

Before beginning Invisalign treatment, Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson will create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique orthodontic needs. Using advanced 3D imaging technology, Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson will map out the desired movement of your teeth throughout each stage of the process. This allows you to preview the final outcome and have a clear understanding of the treatment duration. This precise planning ensures efficient and effective tooth movement, allowing you to achieve your desired results with minimal inconvenience.

One of the most significant advantages of Invisalign is the comfort and convenience it offers. The aligners are smooth and free of sharp edges that can irritate your gums and cheeks. They are also removable, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods without restrictions and easily maintain your oral hygiene routine. With Invisalign, there are no tightening appointments or emergency visits for broken wires or brackets, making it a hassle-free option for busy individuals.

Throughout your Invisalign treatment, Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson will monitor your progress and provide guidance and support. Regular check-ups will allow them to assess your tooth movement, make necessary adjustments, and address any concerns you may have. This ongoing care ensures that your treatment stays on track and maximizes the effectiveness of the aligners, resulting in a beautifully aligned smile.

Invisalign has transformed the field of orthodontics, offering a comfortable, convenient, and virtually invisible alternative to traditional braces. With its customized treatment plan, comfort, enhanced aesthetics, and predictable results, Invisalign empowers individuals to achieve the smiles they've always dreamed of. Consult Quest Johnson Orthodontics to determine if Invisalign is the right choice for you and embark on a transformative journey towards a straighter, more confident smile today.

Taking Care of Your Invisalign Aligners

Did you know over 10 million people across the U.S. have had orthodontic treatment using Invisalign? That includes many people right here in our Mooresville community.

Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements that Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson plan out for you.

It is important that your take care of your Invisalign aligners to ensure they are doing their best in helping shape your teeth according to your plan.

One of Invisalign’s biggest advantages is having the ability to take the aligners out to eat and drink… but that doesn't mean they don't get dirty. Keeping your aligners clean is a vital part of your treatment, and it's the only way to keep them invisible, odorless, and free from germs. Without proper cleaning, your aligners can discolor, smell, and build up deposits of plaque and bacteria that can eat away at the enamel on your teeth.

Caring for your Invisalign aligners is easy. Just follow these simple Do's and Don'ts when wearing Invisalign:

DO Rinse Every Time: Any time you take your aligners out of your mouth, rinse them thoroughly under running water. This will rinse away bacteria, saliva, and food particles.

DON’T Boil Your Aligners: Hot water will distort the trays. It is not safe to place your Invisalign aligners into the dishwasher or in boiling water. The best way to clean your aligners is with a clean toothbrush and cool water.

DO Brush and Floss Your Teeth: Proper care isn't just about clean aligners; your teeth need to stay clean too. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent buildup of plaque and bacteria under the aligners.

DON’T Use Toothpaste: Toothpaste is great for your teeth, but it can harm your aligners. When you brush them, do so gently and without toothpaste.

DO Use Clear, Anti-Bacterial Soft Soap: Anti-Bacterial soft soap is a great way to keep your aligners free of bacteria and plaque.

DON’T Use Scented or Colored Soap: Using anything but clear soap with aligners can cause them to stain.

DO Brush Carefully: Ideally, you want to brush your Invisalign aligners every time you take them out or before you put them back in. But be careful, as overzealous brushing can leave visible marks and scratches on your aligners.

If you have questions about caring for your Invisalign aligners, we are here to help! Feel free to reach out to us to schedule an appointment, or just ask your questions, at 317-834-4933. Or email us at info@QuestJohnsonOrtho.com.

Gum Disease Awareness Month

gum disease quest johnson

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month. More than 80 percent of Americans are living with periodontal or gum disease, which most often than not, goes unnoticed. Because the symptoms are barely noticeable at first and there is no pain involved, it can be tough

According to the American Association of Periodontology (AAP), you may have gum disease, even if it's in its early stages, if:

  • your gums are red, swollen and sore to the touch.
  • your gums bleed when you eat, brush or floss.
  • you see pus or other signs of infection around the gums and teeth.
  • your gums look as if they are "pulling away" from the teeth.
  • you frequently have bad breath or notice a bad taste in your mouth.
  • or some of your teeth are loose, or feel as if they are moving away from the other teeth.

A great oral hygiene routine and regular dental visits are the absolute best way to take a preventative measure against gum disease. The American Dental Association (ADA) site recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush that fits your mouth comfortably, so it reaches every tooth surface adequately. Be sure to floss everyday to ensure your gums are healthy and pink.

Just Got Braces? Avoid these Holiday Treats

quest johnson orthodontics

The Holidays are here and that means snow, endless sweets and of course no school for kids. The holidays are the perfect time to celebrate with family and also a time where we can slip up on certain foods to avoid, especially if we have braces. From sugar, to cookies to gingerbread houses, there is no end in the sweet treats. Here are three foods to avoid this holiday season.

1. Candy Canes:
These beautiful perfect treats are one to avoid this season if you have braces. The hard candy could damage your braces and the stickiness of the peppermint candy can get stuck in between your orthodontic appliances.

2. Popcorn:
If you string popcorn around your tree, you know this how involves eating the popcorn as well. Popcorn is a great treat, however you may want to stay away from it this year. Popcorn is notorious for getting stuck in between teeth and your braces.

3. Caramel Sweets
Who doesn’t love the sweet caramel treats this time of year. From caramel apple to caramel drizzled on your popcorn to your Starbucks drink, seems like caramel is everywhere this time of year. Be sure to stay away from this sticky treat, because it can be damaging to your teeth and braces.

Bad Breath & Braces

After getting braces, new patients may develop bad breath from not cleaning their teeth properly. Simply doing a quick job brushing your teeth is not enough to keep your teeth in great shape, especially when you wear braces. Bacteria feeds on food particles leftover after you eat, and this sneaky bacterium creates an unpleasant odor.

We certainly understand bad breath can be uncomfortable to talk about, but it happens to most of us. The important thing to do if you’re experiencing bad breath (or know someone who is) is to determine the root of the problem. The most common factor for bad breath our patients is almost typically caused by poor oral hygiene.  It's important to brush immediately after every meal or snack or at least rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash if you aren’t able to brush. Bad breath-causing odors and bacteria can also cling to removable orthodontics (like a retainer or clear aligners), so be sure to remove them before eating, even if you're only having a snack.

If you need a little guidance on how to keep your Quest Johnson Orthodontics smile looking it's best, just ask us at your next appointment! We're here to help.

If you're still searching for a few more snacks to add to your Super Bowl menu, we've got two that will be sure to score with your friends & family.

Hot Ham & Cheese Party Rolls

  • 1 can refrigerated pizza crust
  • 1 lb. deli ham (thinly sliced, but not shaved)
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray
  2. Unroll the pizza dough onto a cutting board. Press into an approximately 13x18-inch rectangle. Top with ham and cheese slices. Starting on the longer side of the rectangle, roll up the edge tightly. When you reach the end, pinch the seam together and flip the roll so that the seam is face side down. Cut into 12 slices. Arrange in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Next combine the butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and poppy seeds in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until the butter is melted and glaze is smooth. Pour evenly over the top of the rolls.
  4. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: Make these rolls a day ahead! Refrigerate rolls up to 24 hours before baking. Just make sure to warm up the glaze so you're able to pour it on top of the rolls!

Crockpot Cranberry Meatballs
  • 1 bag frozen meatballs (any brand)
  • 1 jar chili sauce
  • 1 can jellied cranberry sauce
Directions:
  1. Add chili sauce and cranberry sauce to a medium mixing bowl. Use a whisk to mix ingredients until semi-smooth.
  2. Add half the bag of meatballs to your crockpot. Top with half of the sauce mixture. Repeat with remaining meatballs and sauce.
  3. Cook on low until heated through, typically 3-4 hours.

This crowd-pleasing favorite can easily be adapted for a larger group! Just double the recipe and increase your heating time to 5-6 hours. In a time crunch? Heat meatballs and sauce on your stovetop until warm. Transfer to your crockpot for a quick, delicious addition to your game day party!

The Tooth Truth

Our dedication to providing extraordinary personal service with compassion and consideration to the unique needs of each of our patients is our top priority. We feel open communication is extremely important in creating a positive environment for our patients and ensuring a successful treatment outcome. Here at Quest Johnson Orthodontics, we consider dental health to be an integral part of overall good health. We believe that good dental health can instill a sense of well-being, provide a lifelong smile, and promote good overall health.

To that note, let’s talk about the truth about our teeth. Our bone and gum tissues are supported by our teeth. If this support is lost or is poorly aligned, then our bone and gums can begin to erode. If the teeth are properly aligned the bone and gums are less likely to erode.

Your teeth play an important role in digestion. Before your food ever enters your stomach, it has to be chewed by your teeth. This process is called mastication. The food has to be partially broken down before entering your stomach to be properly digested. Braces straighten your teeth and give you the alignment you need to properly chew your food.

If you are concerned about your alignment, or simply have questions on how to improve your dental health, let’s talk! Our caring team takes pride in providing exceptional care to patients of all ages.

Thanksgiving Countdown!

It seems like the month of November has really flown by! Thanksgiving is just a week away and we’re all looking forward to time with family and friends – not to mention all of the delicious food! While some holidays spotlight foods that might traditionally be a challenge to manage when you have braces, Thanksgiving is typically filled with foods that are braces approved!

If you’re looking to add a new side dish or two to your Thanksgiving table this year, we’ve found two contenders that will not only look spectacular but might also become a new favorite for your family. Both of these would be perfect to bring to a potluck meal since they can both be assembled in advance and each takes less than 30 minutes to heat.

Maple Cranberry Sweet Potatoes
  • 4 lbs. sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1 ½ cups fresh cranberries
  • 3 tbsp. butter
  • 1 ½ tsp. salt

Place whole sweet potatoes in a large pot with just enough water to cover and one teaspoon of salt. Heat to a rapid boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered about 30 minutes or just until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain. Set aside until cool enough to handle.
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, heat maple syrup to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium, and boil gently for 10 to 15 minutes or until reduced to 1/2 cup. Stir in cranberries, butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook just until cranberries pop, typically about 5 minutes.
When ready to bake:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut cooled sweet potatoes into 1-inch-thick slices and arrange in shallow 3-quart ceramic or glass baking dish, overlapping slices if necessary. Spoon maple-cranberry syrup evenly over potatoes and bake uncovered for 20 minutes or until hot.
Green Bean Cheddar Casserole
  • 3 lbs. green beans
  • 2 cups stale bread
  • 3 tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 3 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Bring a large saucepot of salted water to boil. Add green beans to the boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
In a food processor, pulse bread into coarse crumbs. Transfer to a bowl and add olive oil and sliced green onions. Toss to combine and set aside.
In a saucepan, whisk cornstarch and 1/2 cup milk until all cornstarch is dissolved. Add nutmeg and a little salt and pepper. Heat slowly over medium heat, and slowly whisk in remaining 2 cups of milk. Allow sauce to boil for 2 minutes, keep whisking! Reduce heat to low, and add in cheeses one handful at a time, waiting until cheese melts before adding the next handful. Once all cheese has been added and the sauce is smooth, remove from heat. Toss with green beans until well coated with sauce. Transfer mixture to a 3-quart baking dish until ready to bake.
When ready to bake:
Sprinkle reserved breadcrumb mixture over green beans. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until breadcrumbs are golden brown.
Recipe Swaps:
·         To save time, purchase fresh green beans in a microwaveable bag and skip the boiling all together!
·         Use your favorite store-bought breadcrumbs to save additional time in lieu of making them yourself. Panko breadcrumbs are also an excellent substitution, adding even more crunch to the topping of this dish.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! All of us at Quest Johnson Orthodontics are thankful for each and every patient we’ve had the pleasure of serving. Now, what are you going to make with all of the leftovers?
