Improved Dental Health Through Adult Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is often associated with adolescence, but the truth is, it's never too late to achieve a straighter, healthier smile. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in adult orthodontic treatment, driven by advancements in technology, increased awareness of dental health, and a growing emphasis on aesthetics.

One of the primary benefits of adult orthodontic treatment is improved oral health. Misaligned teeth, overcrowding, and malocclusions can contribute to various dental issues, including cavities, gum disease, and uneven wear on teeth. By correcting these alignment issues through orthodontic treatment, adults can mitigate the risk of oral health problems and maintain healthier teeth and gums in the long run.

Misaligned teeth can create challenges when it comes to oral hygiene. Crooked or crowded teeth may be harder to clean effectively, increasing the risk of plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease. By aligning the teeth properly through orthodontic treatment, adults can improve their ability to maintain good oral hygiene habits, leading to healthier teeth and gums.

Malocclusions not only affect the appearance of the smile but also impact bite function. Overbites, underbites, crossbites, and openbites can interfere with proper chewing and speech, causing discomfort and functional limitations. Orthodontic treatment can correct these bite problems, improving dental function and overall oral health.

Untreated orthodontic issues can lead to more serious dental complications over time. For example, malocclusions (bite misalignments) can result in excessive wear on teeth, jaw pain, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. By addressing these issues through orthodontic treatment, adults can prevent the onset of such complications and maintain optimal dental function and comfort.

A straight, beautiful smile can have a significant impact on self-confidence and overall well-being. Many adults seek orthodontic treatment to address cosmetic concerns such as crooked teeth, gaps, or protruding teeth. With modern orthodontic options like clear aligners and tooth-colored braces, adults can discreetly and comfortably achieve the smile they've always desired, boosting their confidence and self-esteem in the process.

One of the reasons adult orthodontic treatment has become increasingly popular is the availability of a wide range of treatment options to suit every lifestyle. From traditional metal braces to clear aligners like Invisalign, adults have choices when it comes to orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners, in particular, offer a discreet and convenient option for adults who prefer a more subtle approach to straightening their teeth.

It's important to recognize that oral health is closely linked to overall health. Poor oral hygiene and untreated dental problems can contribute to systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. By prioritizing adult orthodontic treatment and maintaining good oral health, individuals can reduce their risk of developing these serious health issues.

Investing in orthodontic treatment as an adult may seem like a significant expense upfront, but it can lead to long-term cost savings by preventing dental problems that require more extensive and expensive treatments later on. By addressing orthodontic issues promptly, adults can avoid the need for costly restorative procedures and maintain better overall dental health in the future.

Adult orthodontic treatment offers numerous benefits beyond just cosmetic improvements. By addressing misalignments, overcrowding, and bite problems, adults can enjoy better oral health, enhanced aesthetics, and improved overall well-being. With advancements in orthodontic technology and a variety of treatment options available, there's no reason to put off achieving the smile you've always wanted. Investing in adult orthodontic treatment is not only an investment in your dental health but also in your confidence, comfort, and quality of life. Don't wait any longer—take the first step toward a healthier, happier smile today.

Making Invisalign Treatment Affordable

Invisalign has revolutionized orthodontic treatment, offering a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces. However, one common concern among potential patients is the cost of Invisalign treatment. While it's true that Invisalign can be more expensive than traditional braces, it's essential to understand the factors that contribute to the cost and the value that Invisalign provides.

Several factors influence the cost of Invisalign treatment, including:

  • Complexity of the Case: The complexity of your orthodontic issues will impact the duration and intensity of treatment, which can affect the overall cost.
  • Additional Treatments: In some cases, additional treatments such as attachments, retainers, or refinement aligners may be necessary, adding to the overall cost of treatment.

While the cost of Invisalign treatment may initially seem daunting, it's essential to consider the value that Invisalign provides:

  • Comfortable and Removable: Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit your teeth comfortably and can be removed for eating, brushing, and special occasions, offering greater convenience and flexibility.
  • Improved Oral Health: Invisalign treatment can correct misalignment issues, reducing the risk of dental problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Predictable Results: Invisalign utilizes advanced technology to design customized treatment plans and predictably move your teeth into the desired positions, resulting in more efficient and effective treatment outcomes.
  • Lifestyle Benefits: Invisalign aligners allow you to maintain your regular oral hygiene routine and enjoy your favorite foods without restrictions, making them a convenient option for busy adults and teens.

Achieving the smile of your dreams with Invisalign treatment doesn't have to break the bank. There are several strategies you can use to make Invisalign treatment more affordable.

The first step in making Invisalign treatment more affordable is to explore your insurance coverage options. While not all dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment, some may offer partial coverage for Invisalign. Contact your insurance provider to inquire about your coverage options and any potential reimbursement for orthodontic treatment. Even if your plan doesn't cover Invisalign specifically, it may cover a portion of the cost of traditional braces, which can help offset the expenses.

If you have access to a flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) through your employer, consider using these funds to cover the cost of Invisalign treatment. FSAs and HSAs allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses, including orthodontic treatment. By utilizing these accounts, you can lower your out-of-pocket costs for Invisalign and save money on taxes in the process.

Quest Johnson Orthodontics offers flexible payment plans and financing options to help make Invisalign treatment more affordable for our patients. These plans may allow you to spread the cost of treatment out over several months or years, making it easier to fit into your budget. Additionally, we partner with third-party financing companies that offer low-interest or interest-free payment plans for qualified patients.

Invisalign treatment is an investment in your smile and self-confidence. While the cost of treatment may vary depending on individual factors, the value that Invisalign provides in terms of discretion, comfort, oral health benefits, and predictable results often outweighs the initial expense. By exploring financing options and discussing your budget and concerns with Dr. Quest, Dr. Johnson and their team, you can take the first step towards achieving a straighter, healthier smile that lasts a lifetime. Remember, investing in your smile is an investment in yourself.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Your Teeth

Quest Johnson Orthodontics

Our teeth are not only essential for chewing and smiling; they play a significant role in our overall health and well-being. While we may think we know everything about our pearly whites, there are surprising facts and hidden secrets that can shed new light on dental care. Below are five intriguing things you didn't know about your teeth. Understanding these lesser-known facts can help you prioritize oral hygiene and maintain a radiant smile for years to come.

  1. Teeth Are Stronger Than You Think - Despite their small size, teeth are remarkably strong and durable. They are composed of the hardest substance in the human body, enamel. Enamel is the outermost layer of your teeth that protects the underlying dentin and pulp. However, enamel is not invincible and can still be damaged by factors like poor oral hygiene, acidic foods, or teeth grinding.
  2. Your Teeth Are Unique Like Your Fingerprint - Just like your fingerprints, your teeth have their own distinct characteristics. Factors such as tooth shape, alignment, and bite patterns contribute to this individuality.
  3. Oral Health Reflects Overall Health - The state of your oral health can provide valuable insights into your overall well-being. Research has revealed associations between oral health and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and even pregnancy complications. Understanding this connection underscores the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices, including regular dental check-ups, to prevent and manage oral diseases and potentially reduce the risk of systemic health issues.
  4. Your Teeth Have Their Own Lifespan - Contrary to popular belief, teeth are not indestructible and do not last a lifetime without proper care. The average lifespan of natural teeth can vary, but with proper oral hygiene and regular dental care, they can serve you well throughout your life. However, factors like tooth decay, gum disease, and trauma can shorten their lifespan.
  5. Your Teeth Hold Clues to Your Past - Your teeth hold more than just the memories of your childhood smiles; they also hold clues to your past. Dental professionals can gather valuable information about your age, diet, and overall health by examining your teeth. Additionally, researchers can study dental remains to gain insights into ancient populations' diets, migration patterns, and even evidence of diseases like dental caries or periodontal conditions.

Exploring the lesser-known aspects of our teeth reveals the intricacies and importance of oral health. From their surprising strength and individuality to their connection with overall health and historical significance, our teeth are truly remarkable. By embracing this knowledge, we can prioritize proper oral hygiene, seek regular dental care, and nurture our smiles for a lifetime…because a healthy smile goes far beyond appearances, it's a reflection of our overall well-being.

The Benefits of Adult Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is often associated with adolescents, but did you know that adults can also benefit greatly from orthodontics? Adult orthodontics has become increasingly popular as more individuals recognize the positive impact it can have on their oral health, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

Adult orthodontics goes beyond cosmetic enhancements. Misaligned teeth and improper bites can lead to various oral health issues, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and excessive wear on tooth surfaces. By correcting the alignment of teeth, orthodontic treatment helps to alleviate these problems, making oral hygiene practices more effective and reducing the risk of dental complications. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, promoting healthier gums and reducing the likelihood of plaque buildup and periodontal issues. By investing in adult orthodontics, individuals can achieve not only a beautiful smile but also a healthier mouth, enhancing their overall oral well-being.

One of the most noticeable benefits of adult orthodontics is the transformation it brings to a person's smile and overall appearance. Straightening crooked or overcrowded teeth can enhance facial symmetry, creating a more harmonious and attractive smile. By addressing dental imperfections, such as gaps or protruding teeth, orthodontic treatment can significantly improve the aesthetics of a person's smile, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. Feeling proud of one's smile can have a positive impact on personal and professional interactions, leading to increased social confidence.

Adult orthodontics not only aligns teeth but also promotes long-term dental stability. By addressing bite issues, such as overbites, underbites, or crossbites, orthodontic treatment helps to properly distribute the forces during chewing, reducing strain on the jaw joints and minimizing the risk of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). Additionally, correcting misalignments can prevent excessive tooth wear. By investing in adult orthodontics, individuals can maintain a healthier, more stable bite and protect their dental investments for years to come.

Advancements in orthodontic technology have revolutionized the field, making treatment options more discreet, efficient, and comfortable than ever before. Traditional metal braces are no longer the only choice. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, have gained popularity among adults due to their nearly invisible appearance and removability, allowing for greater convenience and flexibility. Additionally, accelerated orthodontics, using techniques like high-frequency vibration, can expedite tooth movement and reduce treatment duration. With a range of treatment options available, adult orthodontics can be customized to fit individual preferences and needs.

Some adults may hesitate to pursue orthodontic treatment due to misconceptions, such as the belief that orthodontics is only for children or that treatment will be uncomfortable or disruptive. However, it is important to dispel these misconceptions and highlight the suitability of orthodontics for individuals of all ages. Orthodontic consultations can help individuals understand their treatment options, expected outcomes, and potential discomfort, allowing them to make informed decisions about their oral health and smile.

Adult orthodontics offers numerous advantages, ranging from improved oral health and enhanced aesthetics to long-term dental stability and increased self-confidence. Through advancements in technology and treatment options, orthodontic interventions are now more accessible, comfortable, and discreet than ever before. If you have been considering adult orthodontics, don't let age hold you back from achieving the smile you desire. Consult with Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson to explore the treatment options available and embark on a journey to transform your smile and boost your overall well-being.

Benefits of Invisalign

Quest Johnson Orthodontics

For many people looking to fix their crooked teeth, image is their main concern. Crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, and other dental issues can affect your self-esteem and make you feel bad about your appearance. If you don’t feel confident about your teeth and smile, you won’t feel confident in yourself.

Invisalign is a new way to straighten your teeth. Created with a medical-grade polyurethane resin, Invisalign aligners are practically invisible. Every aligner is a custom fit, made exactly for your teeth to slowly shift them into place.

There are many benefits to using Invisalign to straighten your teeth. You can conveniently straighten your teeth at a comfortable pace while cleaning your teeth, eating, and drinking normally. You will grow in confidence with your teeth and smile as you straighten them in a way that is hardly noticeable.

Invisible Appearance - Invisalign aligners are completely clear, so they do not detract from your face or smile. This is an especially great option for adults and teens who want to live life without the brackets and wires associated with traditional braces.

Comfort - Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic making Invisalign more comfortable than traditional metal braces. There are no sharp/extruding edges or pieces of Invisalign, and the trays are custom made to fit your teeth and mouth.

Non-Invasive - Due to technology advances, Invisalign does not use invasive measures to detail your teeth. Using 3D scanning technology, Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson can take a full scan of your teeth without an x-ray or impressions. These scans are then translated into 3D prints that are used to create your individualized aligners.

Improved Cleanliness - A clean mouth is a healthy mouth, and by the end of your treatment, you want the healthiest teeth possible. Invisalign aligners are removable. They should be taken out during meals and at any other time you are eating or drinking anything other than plain water. When you are ready to brush and floss your teeth just remove the aligner trays, clean your teeth, and put them back in. Flossing and brushing can be done normally without the need for special equipment. You should also brush andclean the inside of your aligners to make sure no food or bacteria builds up inside

Eat Whatever You Want - With traditional braces, you are limited in the foods you can eat or drink, but with Invisalign, all food and drinks are permissible. Because the metal brackets can snap off or the wires bend, you should not eat sticky foods, hard foods, or crunchy foods. This rules out caramel, gum, nuts, popcorn, ice, corn-on-the-cob, and apples. Luckily, with Invisalign removable aligners, you do not have to worry about what you eat.

Prevent other Dental Problems - Crooked teeth can cause more problems than just making you self-conscious of your smile. If your teeth are crooked, you are more likely to have a host of other dental problems. Widely spaced or crowded teeth can raise your risk of developing gum disease since your gums do not fit properly around your teeth. Abnormal bites can create sleeping problems such as sleep apnea. Aligning your teeth with Invisalign aligners can also reduce gum inflammation, tooth sensitivity, bad breath, and even chipping of teeth. Making sure your teeth are straightened with Invisalign allows for great dental hygiene to help prevent worse dental issues.

The results speak for themselves…While there are many options to straighten your teeth Invisalign is the only clear option that is free of brackets and wires. Invisalign allows you to work, eat, and participate in social situations worry free! All while giving you a perfect smile.

Invisible aligners must be worn for 22 hours in a day to have the maximum effect. While they are removable, they can’t straighten any teeth if they aren’t in contact with them. If they are worn properly, most treatments last between 12 and 18 months. Now that you know some of the benefits of Invisalign give our office a call to schedule your initial exam and begin your journey to a perfect smile!

What are Clear Aligners?

Advancements in orthodontics have given our patients more options for achieving the smile they have always wanted! At Quest Johnson Orthodontics, we offer the latest in orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, like Invisalign! Clear aligners allow Drs. Quest and Johnson to achieve the same results as traditional braces but without any brackets or wires. If you are thinking about improving your smile but can’t picture yourself in braces…clear aligners might be the perfect option for you.

What are Clear Aligners? Clear aligners use cutting-edge software and technology to shift misaligned teeth with a series of customized trays. Clear aligners are a removable orthodontic appliance. Clear aligners are made of a thermoplastic material and custom-designed to fit over your teeth. Although they look very different from braces, clear aligners use the same gentle pressure to gradually move your teeth into the perfect position.

Clear aligners offer more flexibility than traditional braces. Unlike braces, no part of the aligner is attached to the actual surface of the tooth. Because the aligners can be removed, they make it easier to keep your teeth and gums clean throughout the treatment process. Clear aligners are taken out before you begin your normal dental hygiene routine, allowing you to brush and floss the same way you always have. Did we mention that since the aligners are removable…there are no restrictions on what you can eat!

Are Clear Aligners Expensive? As clear aligners have become more popular over the years, they have also become more affordable. Clear aligners tend to cost about as much as traditional braces; however, the cost of your orthodontic treatment will vary depending on your individual needs and treatment plan.

At Quest Johnson Orthodontics, we’re committed to providing affordable, high-quality treatment that fits your budget. Our staff will discuss the cost of your treatment and your payment plan options so you can make the best choice for you, and your smile. Our office is committed to helping you maximize your insurance benefits. As a service to our patients, we will bill insurance companies for services. If you have any questions, our courteous staff is always available to answer them. We accept almost every traditional (Non-PPO, Non-HMO) insurance plan. We are preferred providers for Delta-PPO, Dentemax and United Concordia. For your convenience, we also accept payment by Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

How Long does Clear Aligner Treatment Take? Each patient’s orthodontic problem is unique, and each patient responds to treatment differently, so there is no universal answer for how long your clear aligner treatment will take. In general, the total treatment time for clear aligners can be anywhere from 9-15 months.

There’s a lot to love about clear aligners, but they aren’t always a good fit for every patient. If you’d like to learn more about how clear aligners can transform your smile, give Quest Johnson Orthodontics a call today and schedule a complimentary consultation. Drs. Quest and Johnson will assess your smile to determine if clear aligners are a good fit for you.

Taking Care of Your Invisalign Aligners

Did you know over 10 million people across the U.S. have had orthodontic treatment using Invisalign? That includes many people right here in our Mooresville community.

Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements that Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson plan out for you.

It is important that your take care of your Invisalign aligners to ensure they are doing their best in helping shape your teeth according to your plan.

One of Invisalign’s biggest advantages is having the ability to take the aligners out to eat and drink… but that doesn't mean they don't get dirty. Keeping your aligners clean is a vital part of your treatment, and it's the only way to keep them invisible, odorless, and free from germs. Without proper cleaning, your aligners can discolor, smell, and build up deposits of plaque and bacteria that can eat away at the enamel on your teeth.

Caring for your Invisalign aligners is easy. Just follow these simple Do's and Don'ts when wearing Invisalign:

DO Rinse Every Time: Any time you take your aligners out of your mouth, rinse them thoroughly under running water. This will rinse away bacteria, saliva, and food particles.

DON’T Boil Your Aligners: Hot water will distort the trays. It is not safe to place your Invisalign aligners into the dishwasher or in boiling water. The best way to clean your aligners is with a clean toothbrush and cool water.

DO Brush and Floss Your Teeth: Proper care isn't just about clean aligners; your teeth need to stay clean too. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent buildup of plaque and bacteria under the aligners.

DON’T Use Toothpaste: Toothpaste is great for your teeth, but it can harm your aligners. When you brush them, do so gently and without toothpaste.

DO Use Clear, Anti-Bacterial Soft Soap: Anti-Bacterial soft soap is a great way to keep your aligners free of bacteria and plaque.

DON’T Use Scented or Colored Soap: Using anything but clear soap with aligners can cause them to stain.

DO Brush Carefully: Ideally, you want to brush your Invisalign aligners every time you take them out or before you put them back in. But be careful, as overzealous brushing can leave visible marks and scratches on your aligners.

If you have questions about caring for your Invisalign aligners, we are here to help! Feel free to reach out to us to schedule an appointment, or just ask your questions, at 317-834-4933. Or email us at info@QuestJohnsonOrtho.com.

Gum Disease Awareness Month

gum disease quest johnson

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month. More than 80 percent of Americans are living with periodontal or gum disease, which most often than not, goes unnoticed. Because the symptoms are barely noticeable at first and there is no pain involved, it can be tough

According to the American Association of Periodontology (AAP), you may have gum disease, even if it's in its early stages, if:

  • your gums are red, swollen and sore to the touch.
  • your gums bleed when you eat, brush or floss.
  • you see pus or other signs of infection around the gums and teeth.
  • your gums look as if they are "pulling away" from the teeth.
  • you frequently have bad breath or notice a bad taste in your mouth.
  • or some of your teeth are loose, or feel as if they are moving away from the other teeth.

A great oral hygiene routine and regular dental visits are the absolute best way to take a preventative measure against gum disease. The American Dental Association (ADA) site recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush that fits your mouth comfortably, so it reaches every tooth surface adequately. Be sure to floss everyday to ensure your gums are healthy and pink.

When it comes to braces, your first few days may be uncomfortable. It may even feel as if your braces are sticking out. Your gums may be sore and tender, but that does not have to stop you from living your life.

An important item to use for relief is dental wax. Dental wax is “a soft, harmless gum protector for children and adults with braces that can be used in a pinch to cover brackets and protruding wires with a smooth surface,” according to Colgate. Dental wax can provide relief when a wire breaks and pokes out. Just add some dental wax on your gums and can help prevent pain while your wait for your next appointment.

Dental wax is completely safe.

Step 1: Be sure you have dental wax, you can ask us for recommendations on which we feel is best.
Step 2: Wash your hands.
Step 3: Brush your teeth, where you want to apply the dental wax
Step 4: Pinch off a piece of wax about the size of a small pea
Step 5: Squeeze until it softens and roll it into a ball, then flatten the ball slightly
Step 6: Gently push the wax onto the problem area of the braces

If you want to remove the dental wax, you can use floss. Be gentle, not to damage your teeth or gums. If you have any questions over dental wax, or any other orthodontic questions, please feel free to call us at (317) 834-4933 or at our Elwood Office at (765) 552-5461

Thanksgiving Countdown!

It seems like the month of November has really flown by! Thanksgiving is just a week away and we’re all looking forward to time with family and friends – not to mention all of the delicious food! While some holidays spotlight foods that might traditionally be a challenge to manage when you have braces, Thanksgiving is typically filled with foods that are braces approved!

If you’re looking to add a new side dish or two to your Thanksgiving table this year, we’ve found two contenders that will not only look spectacular but might also become a new favorite for your family. Both of these would be perfect to bring to a potluck meal since they can both be assembled in advance and each takes less than 30 minutes to heat.

Maple Cranberry Sweet Potatoes
  • 4 lbs. sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1 ½ cups fresh cranberries
  • 3 tbsp. butter
  • 1 ½ tsp. salt

Place whole sweet potatoes in a large pot with just enough water to cover and one teaspoon of salt. Heat to a rapid boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered about 30 minutes or just until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain. Set aside until cool enough to handle.
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, heat maple syrup to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium, and boil gently for 10 to 15 minutes or until reduced to 1/2 cup. Stir in cranberries, butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook just until cranberries pop, typically about 5 minutes.
When ready to bake:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut cooled sweet potatoes into 1-inch-thick slices and arrange in shallow 3-quart ceramic or glass baking dish, overlapping slices if necessary. Spoon maple-cranberry syrup evenly over potatoes and bake uncovered for 20 minutes or until hot.
Green Bean Cheddar Casserole
  • 3 lbs. green beans
  • 2 cups stale bread
  • 3 tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 3 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Bring a large saucepot of salted water to boil. Add green beans to the boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
In a food processor, pulse bread into coarse crumbs. Transfer to a bowl and add olive oil and sliced green onions. Toss to combine and set aside.
In a saucepan, whisk cornstarch and 1/2 cup milk until all cornstarch is dissolved. Add nutmeg and a little salt and pepper. Heat slowly over medium heat, and slowly whisk in remaining 2 cups of milk. Allow sauce to boil for 2 minutes, keep whisking! Reduce heat to low, and add in cheeses one handful at a time, waiting until cheese melts before adding the next handful. Once all cheese has been added and the sauce is smooth, remove from heat. Toss with green beans until well coated with sauce. Transfer mixture to a 3-quart baking dish until ready to bake.
When ready to bake:
Sprinkle reserved breadcrumb mixture over green beans. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until breadcrumbs are golden brown.
Recipe Swaps:
·         To save time, purchase fresh green beans in a microwaveable bag and skip the boiling all together!
·         Use your favorite store-bought breadcrumbs to save additional time in lieu of making them yourself. Panko breadcrumbs are also an excellent substitution, adding even more crunch to the topping of this dish.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! All of us at Quest Johnson Orthodontics are thankful for each and every patient we’ve had the pleasure of serving. Now, what are you going to make with all of the leftovers?

Out With the Old & In With The New

With cold and flu season starting, germs seem to be lurking everywhere! While it’s difficult to avoid catching the office cold or flu bug, you can help keep your number one oral hygiene accessory in great shape by replacing your toothbrush regularly. Toothbrushes help keep your teeth and mouth clean, but how long should you a keep a toothbrush? It is recommended that you switch out that old toothbrush for a fresh new one every 3 to 4 months, and directly after any cold or flu. Replacing your toothbrush is essential since they are constantly being exposed to germs and bacteria. If you notice the bristles of your toothbrush have become worn, that is a clear sign that you need a new toothbrush. People who wear braces will likely need to replace their toothbrushes frequently, as braces break down and fracture bristles which makes the toothbrush lose its effectiveness.

It's helpful to keep a pack of toothbrushes available in the house at all times for easy replacement. You may be thinking "My toothbrush is fine, I have it broken in just the way I like it”. While that could be true, did you know that your old toothbrush could actually be harming your mouth?

3 Reasons to Change Out Your Old Toothbrush
1.     Bacteria - Your toothbrush is a tool for removing bacteria from your teeth…but it doesn’t actually kill bacteria. Some of the bacteria from your teeth stay on your toothbrush after you are done brushing. Now, this isn’t a problem initially, but imagine three to four months of bacteria build up on your toothbrush. That old bacteria ridden toothbrush is in your mouth at least twice a day…yuck.
2.     Bristles - Like any tool, a toothbrush wears down. Worn bristles are tough on your enamel and can wear it away over time. Not only that… an old, worn toothbrush can be up to 95 percent less effective at removing plaque.
3.     Illness - Always change your toothbrush after you’ve been sick, even if it’s not “technically” time to switch out your toothbrush. Germs and bacteria in your mouth require you to brush twice a day, every day.

If you feel like changing your toothbrush every three months is wasteful, we’ve got a solution! Put that old toothbrush to work doing odd jobs around the house. Old toothbrushes are great for cleaning around facet fixtures and tile grout. They can even be used to clean tools, computer keyboards, and tennis shoes! Make sure to mark your calendar as a reminder to replace your toothbrush at least every 3 to 4 months. If you need a few tips on keeping your smile in tip-top shape, make sure to ask at your next appointment at Quest Johnson Orthodontics.
