Safeguard Your Smile

April isn't just about showers bringing May flowers; it's also a time to highlight the importance of safeguarding our smiles. National Facial Protection Month serves as a reminder of the significance of protecting our faces during sports and recreational activities.

Sports and recreational activities bring joy, camaraderie, and numerous health benefits. However, they also pose risks, particularly to our faces. According to the American Dental Association, sports-related injuries account for a significant portion of dental injuries each year. From knocked-out teeth to fractured jaws, these injuries can be painful, costly, and sometimes irreversible.

The good news is that many sports-related facial injuries are preventable with the use of proper protective gear. Mouthguards, helmets, face masks, and protective eyewear function as a barrier against potential impacts, reducing the risk of injury to the face, mouth, and jaw. These simple yet effective tools can make all the difference in preserving your smile and overall oral health.

National Facial Protection Month serves as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of facial protection in sports and recreational activities. It's a time for athletes, coaches, parents, and healthcare professionals to come together and advocate for injury prevention strategies. By promoting education, proper equipment usage, and adherence to safety guidelines, we can create safer environments for participants of all ages and skill levels.

How to Protect Your Smile

Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a weekend warrior, taking proactive steps to protect your smile is essential. Here are some practical tips to minimize the risk of facial injuries during sports and recreational activities:

Wear a Mouthguard: Invest in a custom-fitted mouthguard, especially if you participate in contact sports like football, hockey, or basketball. A well-fitting mouthguard provides cushioning and protection for your teeth, lips, cheeks, and tongue.

Use Appropriate Headgear: Depending on the activity, wear helmets, face masks, or protective eyewear to shield your head and face from impact. Make sure the gear fits properly and meets safety standards recommended for your sport.

Practice Safe Play: Follow the rules of the game and encourage sportsmanship among players. Avoid reckless behavior that increases the likelihood of collisions or injuries to yourself and others.

Stay Alert and Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings and potential hazards on the field, court, or playground. Stay focused on the game while remaining vigilant to avoid accidents or collisions.

Maintain Proper Technique: Learn and practice proper techniques for your sport to reduce the risk of injury. Proper form and body mechanics can help minimize the impact of falls, collisions, and other incidents.

Regular Dental Checkups: Schedule routine dental checkups to assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw. Early detection of dental issues allows for prompt treatment and intervention to prevent further damage.

As we celebrate National Facial Protection Month, let's commit to prioritizing the safety and well-being of our smiles. By raising awareness, advocating for proper protective gear, and promoting injury prevention strategies, we can enjoy sports and recreational activities with greater peace of mind. Together, let's safeguard our smiles for a lifetime of health and happiness.

If you have any questions on how to protect your smile while playing sports, feel free to contact Quest Johnson Orthodontics. Our team of experienced professionals are here to help.

Preparing for Orthodontic Treatment

Embarking on the journey to a straighter and healthier smile through orthodontic treatment is an exciting endeavor. Whether you're about to get braces or aligners, proper preparation can make the process smoother and more comfortable.

Before diving into orthodontic treatment, take the time to understand the process and what to expect. Research different types of braces or aligners, familiarize yourself with common orthodontic terminologies, and explore potential challenges. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions and alleviate any apprehensions you may have.

Prior to starting orthodontic treatment, it's crucial to address any existing dental issues. Schedule a comprehensive dental check-up to address cavities, gum disease, or any other concerns. A clean and healthy oral foundation will contribute to a more successful and efficient orthodontic journey.

When you are ready to start your orthodontic journey, schedule a consultation with Quest Johnson Orthodontics. This initial visit involves a thorough examination of your teeth, jaw, and bite, allowing Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson to recommend the most suitable treatment plan for your specific needs. This is also an opportunity to discuss any concerns, ask questions, and establish a comfortable rapport with the Quest Johnson Orthodontic team.

Depending on the type of orthodontic treatment, you might need specific oral care products. If you're getting braces, invest in a quality soft-bristle toothbrush, orthodontic wax, and dental floss or interdental brushes for thorough cleanings. Orthodontic treatment often comes with dietary restrictions to protect your braces or aligners. Stock your pantry with orthodontic-friendly foods such as soft fruits, yogurt, pasta, and mashed potatoes. Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can damage braces or interfere with aligners.

Establish a consistent oral care routine to maintain good hygiene throughout your orthodontic journey. Brush your teeth after every meal, floss or use interdental brushes to clean between braces wires, and rinse with an orthodontic-friendly mouthwash. A dedicated oral care routine will help prevent issues like cavities and gum inflammation.

It's common to experience some discomfort or soreness during the initial days of orthodontic treatment. Prepare by having over-the-counter pain relievers on hand, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and follow any care instructions provided by our orthodontic team.

Lastly, approach your orthodontic treatment with a positive mindset. Understand that the journey to a beautiful smile takes time, and the temporary inconveniences are steppingstones toward a lasting transformation. Embrace the changes, stay committed to your orthodontic care plan, and celebrate the small victories along the way. By taking these steps, you set the foundation for a successful and transformative experience that will ultimately lead to the radiant smile you've always desired.

Getting the Most Out of Your Orthodontic Treatment

Embarking on orthodontic treatment is a significant investment in your oral health and the beauty of your smile. Whether you're considering braces, aligners, or other orthodontic options, it's essential to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment. By adopting a proactive approach and following certain guidelines, you can ensure that your orthodontic journey is as successful and efficient as possible.

  • Follow Treatment Instructions Diligently - To optimize the effectiveness of your orthodontic treatment, it's vital to follow the instructions provided by your orthodontist. This includes wearing any appliances, braces, or aligners as prescribed, adhering to recommended oral hygiene practices, and attending regular check-ups and adjustments. Compliance with these instructions will help ensure that your teeth are moving in the desired direction and at the expected pace. Skipping appointments or neglecting proper care can prolong treatment time and compromise results.
  • Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene - Maintaining impeccable oral hygiene is crucial throughout your orthodontic treatment. Braces, aligners, and other appliances can create additional spaces for food particles and plaque to accumulate, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum problems. Follow a thorough oral hygiene routine, including brushing after every meal and flossing daily. Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson may also recommend additional tools, such as interdental brushes or water flossers, to ensure thorough cleaning around the braces or aligners.
  • Mind Your Diet and Eating Habits - Your diet and eating habits play a significant role in the success of your orthodontic treatment. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your braces or aligners and prolong treatment time. Opt for softer alternatives and cut food into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Minimize sugary snacks and beverages that can contribute to tooth decay. Be mindful of chewing on non-food items like pens or nails, as they can also cause damage. By making conscious choices, you'll help your treatment progress smoothly and prevent any setbacks.
  • Protect Your Smile During Physical Activities - If you participate in sports or other physical activities, it's essential to protect your smile during orthodontic treatment. Wear a mouthguard provided by your orthodontist to shield your teeth and braces from potential injuries. Custom-fit mouthguards offer the best protection and comfort. Even if your activity doesn't require a mouthguard, be mindful of any potential impact on your teeth and take precautions to prevent accidents or trauma.
  • Communicate with Your Orthodontist - Open and honest communication with your orthodontist is key throughout your treatment. If you experience discomfort, pain, or concerns about your progress, don't hesitate to reach out to our team for guidance. We are here to address your questions, make adjustments if necessary, and ensure that you're comfortable and satisfied with your treatment. Regular check-ups provide opportunities to discuss any issues, track your progress, and make any necessary modifications to your treatment plan.
  • Embrace Retention and Follow-up Care - After your active orthodontic treatment, retention and follow-up care are essential for maintaining the results. Dr. Quest and Dr. Johnson will provide you with retainers and specific instructions for wearing them. Consistently wearing your retainers as directed will help prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Additionally, attend follow-up appointments as recommended to monitor the stability of your smile and address any concerns that may arise.

Maximizing the benefits of your orthodontic treatment requires proactive participation. Diligently following treatment instructions, maintaining excellent oral hygiene, being mindful of your diet and activities, communicating openly, and embracing retention care, you can ensure the best possible outcome for your smile journey.

What is the Ideal Bite?

A beautiful smile is a reflection of not only well-aligned teeth but also a harmonious bite. Achieving the ideal bite and smile goes beyond aesthetics; it plays a vital role in oral health, function, and overall well-being.

The ideal bite and smile are synonymous with dental harmony, where the upper and lower teeth align properly and fit together harmoniously. Dental harmony ensures that the forces of chewing and biting are distributed evenly across the teeth, reducing the risk of excessive wear, tooth damage, and jaw joint problems.

The ideal bite involves balanced proportions and midline alignment. The size and shape of each tooth should be proportionate to the adjacent teeth. Additionally, the midline of the upper and lower teeth should align with the midline of the face. These factors contribute to a balanced smile that is aesthetically pleasing and in harmony with facial features.

A proper bite ensures that the teeth fit together correctly, allowing for effective chewing, speaking, and swallowing. An ideal bite minimizes strain on the jaw joints, prevents tooth wear, and reduces the risk of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Having an evaluation by a skilled orthodontist can identify bite irregularities and guide the necessary treatment to achieve an ideal bite.

Straight teeth are a key component of an ideal bite. They contribute to a pleasing aesthetic appearance, boosting self-confidence and enhancing facial symmetry. Proper alignment allows for easier cleaning, reducing the risk of dental decay and gum disease. Straight teeth also play a crucial role in bite stability and jaw joint health. Orthodontic treatments like braces or clear aligners can help achieve the desired alignment and create a harmonious smile.

Attaining an ideal bite goes beyond aesthetics. It encompasses dental harmony, functional occlusion, and a balance between symmetry and proportion. A properly aligned bite and a radiant smile contribute to oral health, overall well-being, and enhanced self-confidence. Consult with Quest Johnson Orthodontics to evaluate your bite and explore suitable treatment options. Embrace the transformative power of an ideal bite and unlock a world of dental harmony and confidence.

Orthodontic Myths

Quest Johnson Orthodontics

Choosing to get orthodontic care is a big decision for anyone. At Quest Johnson Orthodontics, we understand and respect your reasons for wanting to improve the way you look and feel. Our practice will work with you every step of the way to make sure your orthodontic treatment is an amazing experience. Our office utilizes the latest technology while offering a variety of safe and gentle treatment options to give you the customized, individual care you deserve.

We are often asked a lot of great questions on orthodontic care and treatment. We have also seen a lot of false information on orthodontic treatment. Some are rumors and others are myths that are believed to be true. Here are a few orthodontic myths and the truth.

Myth: “My dentist can give me Invisalign.”

Truth: At the foundational level, both an orthodontist and a dentist are health care professionals that work on teeth. Both health care professionals help patients achieve good oral health and both are dental school graduates. However, orthodontists must successfully complete an additional two to three-year residency program of advanced dental education in orthodontics. Orthodontists specialize in the alignment of teeth and services include treating crowded teeth, overbites and under bites. Only an orthodontist who has been trained and certified by Align Technology can diagnose and treat using Invisalign.

Myth: “Braces and orthodontic treatment are only for children.”

Truth: Braces are not just for kids… orthodontics can be rewarding to adults as well. Our teeth provide the support structure for the soft tissue of the lower face, including lips and cheeks. By repositioning the teeth and jaw, skin can appear tighter, and lips can appear fuller.

Myth: “I can’t play sports anymore because I have braces.”

Truth: Having braces, does not mean you have to stop living your life. Whether you just received braces or are near the end of your treatment, braces should not be a barrier to doing the things you love. As long as you wear a mouth guard, braces should not stop you from playing your favorite sport. If you are unsure which type of mouth guard to use or need more information on mouth guards, ask our staff.

Myth: “My teeth will remain straight forever.”

Truth: The truth is…even after your braces have been removed your orthodontic treatment is not over. If you want your teeth to remain straight forever, a retainer will be the most important tool for you to use. Your teeth will start to drift back to the original position if you do not wear your retainer as prescribed by Dr. Johnson and Dr. Quest. Just like you need to keep exercising and eating right to maintain your body; you cannot just diet and exercise once.

Myth: “I don’t need to see my regular dentist while in orthodontic treatment.”

Truth: Even during orthodontic treatment, it is important that you continue to visit your general dentist and continue your regularly scheduled appointments. Wearing braces can make you more prone to plaque and tartar around your teeth, which is why you should stick with your regular dental check-ups.

A new smile means a new life change. At Quest Johnson Orthodontics, we understand that a big decision like this is not easy. We will ensure that we answer all questions and make you feel comfortable. If you have any addition questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask us before coming to your first visit.

Braces Make My Breath Stink

Quest Johnson Orthodontics

We understand that bad breath can be uncomfortable to talk about but unfortunately it happens to most people for several different reasons. Bad breath, or halitosis, can be caused by poor oral hygiene, personal habits such as smoking or eating certain foods, or medical problems. The most common factor for bad breath in patients with braces at Quest Johnson Orthodontics is almost certainly caused by poor oral hygiene.

After getting braces, patients may develop bad breath from not cleaning their teeth correctly. Bacteria feeds on food particles left in your mouth, and this bacteria creates odor. Because braces contain so many small spaces to trap food, the habits that worked great for cleaning your teeth before braces may no longer be enough. It's important to brush immediately after every meal or snack, or to vigorously rinse your teeth with water or mouthwash if you absolutely can't brush. Bad-breath-causing odors and bacteria can also cling to removable orthodontics (like a retainer or clear aligners), so be sure to remove them before eating, even if you're only eating a small amount.

7 Ways to Prevent Bad Breath While Wearing Braces

  1. Brush and Floss Often - Follow a strict routine of brushing and flossing regularly. Brush your teeth after breakfast every morning and prior to going to bed. You follow this up with a daily flossing or WaterFlossing to remove any food particles and buildup of plaque between your teeth.
  2. Use Fluoride Mouthwash - Always use your Phos-Flur/OrthoDefense mouthwash in your daily dental routine to help fight gingivitis, plaque, bad breath, and scars on your teeth.
  3. Stay Hydrated - Dehydration is bad for both your overall health and your oral health as it can increase the chances of bad breath greatly. Drink a lot of water every day to keep your mouth constantly clean and moist.
  4. Eat the Right Foods - Try to avoid sugary foods as much as possible as they lead to poor dental health which in turn leads to tooth decay and bad breath.
  5. Use a Water Flosser – The powerful jets of water provided by it is great for cleaning between your braces and gum line…leaving your mouth clean and fresh.
  6. Keep Breath Mints on Hand - If you've established a proper dental health routine but you still feel self-conscious about having bad breath, you can temporarily freshen your mouth with sugar-free breath mints.
  7. Schedule Regular Dental Visits - Scheduling regular dental visits will help you keep any tooth and gum problems at bay as well as to rectify any oral health issues that may be contributing to bad breath or affecting your braces.

The Right Age for Orthodontics

orthodontics mooresville

Orthodontists today can successfully correct most problems regardless of the patient’s age. But that does not mean that the orthodontic treatment starting age does not matter. In fact it may play a significant role in the total time and expenses required for the completion of the orthodontic treatment.

Children: The magic number is 7! The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have a check-up with an orthodontist by the time they reach age 7, for early detection of any potential problems. At this stage, we can spot potential orthodontic problems related to jaw growth and eruption of adult teeth.

Teenagers: Most orthodontic problems are ideally treated during this time. Usually, all or most permanent teeth are present and patients are at one of their most active phases of growth. This is a great time to correct most problems, as the jaws are actively growing and their growth can be most easily modified during this time.

Adult: As we grow older, our teeth may shift and it may be necessary for an improved smile through orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, and it is never too late to improve your smile.

family tips

Our practice's top priority is to provide you with the highest quality orthodontic care in a friendly, comfortable environment. We recognize that every patient has different needs, and we pride ourselves in the courteous service we deliver to each person who walks through our doors. Whether you're an adult, adolescent or child, our knowledgeable doctors and staff are committed to helping you achieve the smile you deserve - a healthy, beautiful one!

We see families of all types and love to see the initiative to keep your family’s teeth healthy. Here are a few tips to ensure your family is in tip-top shape before their next visit with us.

Brush Your Teeth Together:
Make brushing your teeth a routine every morning and every night. Stick to the routine and ensure that you and your family keep a specific time for brushing your teeth, this will build a great daily habit.

Flossing is Key:
Flossing every day is even more important when you have braces. If you’re having trouble flossing, just use a floss threader with regular floss, or buy special stiff-tipped floss made for braces wearers.

Use Mouthwash:
Using mouthwash, especially during orthodontic treatment is so important. Mouthwash can easily remove food debris from areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. After brushing and flossing, you can swish it around your mouth for a minimum of 30 seconds. This will remove any lingering bacteria and will even help with inflammation of the gums.

Can't Decide? Invisalign Top Benefits

invisalign mooresville

Invisalign treatment is a technique that straightens your teeth without braces, using a series of clear, removable aligners that are custom-modeled to fit your teeth. The virtually invisible aligners gradually reposition your teeth into a smile of which you will be proud.

The advantage to Invisalign is the range of issues it can fix including: Overly crowded teeth, Widely spaced teeth, Overbites, Underbites, and Crossbites. This is the major benefit to invisalign. You can continue to live your life and your aligners are mostly invisible.

  • Clear, virtually invisible aligners
  • Removable, will not get in the way of your activities
  • Easy to remove to eat, brush, and floss
  • Graduate to a new set of aligners every 1 to 2 weeks
  • Easy to monitor your progress with regular appointments

Not everyone is a candidate for the Invisalign aligner system. Please give our office a call to schedule a complimentary consultation.

When it comes to braces, your first few days may be uncomfortable. It may even feel as if your braces are sticking out. Your gums may be sore and tender, but that does not have to stop you from living your life.

An important item to use for relief is dental wax. Dental wax is “a soft, harmless gum protector for children and adults with braces that can be used in a pinch to cover brackets and protruding wires with a smooth surface,” according to Colgate. Dental wax can provide relief when a wire breaks and pokes out. Just add some dental wax on your gums and can help prevent pain while your wait for your next appointment.

Dental wax is completely safe.

Step 1: Be sure you have dental wax, you can ask us for recommendations on which we feel is best.
Step 2: Wash your hands.
Step 3: Brush your teeth, where you want to apply the dental wax
Step 4: Pinch off a piece of wax about the size of a small pea
Step 5: Squeeze until it softens and roll it into a ball, then flatten the ball slightly
Step 6: Gently push the wax onto the problem area of the braces

If you want to remove the dental wax, you can use floss. Be gentle, not to damage your teeth or gums. If you have any questions over dental wax, or any other orthodontic questions, please feel free to call us at (317) 834-4933 or at our Elwood Office at (765) 552-5461

2 Treats to Avoid this Halloween

Happy Halloween from everyone at Quest Johnson Orthodontics! Halloween is the perfect opportunity to talk to your child and remind them about the importance of sticking to their health routine. This includes brushing your teeth, flossing, wearing your retainers, using mouthwash and other health tips.

If you recently received orthodontic treatment such as braces or in the middle of your treatment, we recommend you avoid these sweet treats.

Popcorn Balls: These are often a big hit on Halloween night. You may find a couple of these in your child’s Halloween bucket. Have some floss on hand after enjoying these treats. Please be aware, if you have braces, these are probably not an ideal treat.

Hard Candies: You want to watch out for hard candies on Halloween and beyond. These can break your teeth and can be damaging if you have braces. On top of that, hard candies can cause the sugar to wash all over your teeth. This is due to having the hard candy for longer periods in your mouth.

A Foundation to a Healthy Smile

June is Oral Health Month!

A good oral hygiene routine is the foundation to a healthy smile, especially for young children. For parents, leading by example, should establish healthy habits like brushing, cleaning between your teeth and seeing your dentist. This ultimately leads to the big difference in the health and happiness of your entire family and in children, less fears about visiting their dentist.

Here are a few tips from the American Dental Association that are a great reminder to enforce.

Start a Routine and Stick to It:
You may be tempted to let your child skip brushing after a long day or during times when your normal schedule is off (like vacation), but keep at it. The more second nature brushing becomes the easier it will be to make sure your child is brushing twice a day for two minutes.

Toothpaste:
Learn how to apply the right amount of toothpaste for your child.

First Visit:
Every parent celebrates the milestones in the first year, first words, first steps, first teeth.

Which Type of Floss is Best?

If you’ve visited the dental care aisle recently, the sheer number of options available can be overwhelming. We often have patients ask us which floss is the “best” type of floss. In essence, all of the options on the market today do the same thing, and at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. We’ve listed a few of the options below.

Flossers: Flossers are small plastic instruments with a single floss strip and a pick on the opposite end. This option can be both effective at cleaning the areas in between your teeth and scraping off plaque. These flossers come in flavored varieties as well. They are a great “on the go” option.

Gentle Dental Floss:
Some people will find that regular dental floss is too harsh on their gums. For that reason, several options are available that have soft coatings that are less abrasive on the gums. Typically, gentle floss is just as effective as regular floss and an ideal match for anyone looking for a more sensitive approach to flossing.

Flavored Dental Floss: Flavored dental floss will freshen your breath while you floss! We suggest flavored dental floss if it prompts you to floss your teeth regularly.

Of all of the options, it is difficult to choose the absolute best type of floss.  However, Dr. Quest, Dr. Johnson, and our team feel that the type of floss that works best for you, giving you the greatest chance of succeeding at regular flossing, is the ultimately best choice. For more information on floss, or flossing with braces, ask us at your next appointment. There are many ways to make it both easy AND effective.
